During the course of the year we have had the opportunity to work with many different varieties of harakeke. Our first task for this year was to find and identify 6 varieties that we have been using. A valuable resource I have found in being able to do this was seeing first parts of the Rene Orchiston Collection around the Hastings region as well as using the online database held by Landcare Research which can be found at:

Wharariki:
This variety of Wharariki mum and I harvested in April from the house of one of mums work collegues. It was a lovely variety for making Kono and Konae (which was as far as I was into the course at that time) but didn't hold much muka which was what I was needing to make double and single papa whiri whariki.
